This blog post is to inform others about an ongoing project. I have been working on a bios mod for my optiplex 745 lenovo laptop and I am hoping to get feedback from others who have attempted this process. The purpose of this blog post is to discuss, explain, and ask questions about what has been going wrong throughout the installation process or any other difficulties that may have presented themselves throughout the process. So far I have been working with an “slic copy” of the original bios which has been compressed into a zip file. With that being said, it is important to note that this is still only a copy that has not yet been modified. The next step in modding my bios would be modifying the bios and then flashing it back onto my computer. Step 1: First thing I did was extract the zip file and then open up the sestcfg file in notepad++. After opening the file, I found that there is actually more than just what you see on screen which was also indicated by scrolling down to around line 220. I am assuming that the hwsetup part of the file is what allows you to modify your computer’s settings. I tried looking up tutorials on modifying bios files but could not find anything so it is interesting to see what can be done with this program. Step 2: I now searched for a program that would allow me to open up the sestcfg file in order for me to be able to modify it. Apparently, there is a free program called SES-CONF which you can use according to the developer’s website . Unfortunately, when I went through all of the steps necessary to download and install this program it would not work on my computer. Step 3: After a few unsuccessful attempts at installing a program that would allow me to edit the file, I decided to search online for a different way to accomplish this. This is when I came across an article titled “ How to Change Your Dell BIOS from MBR to GPT using BCDedit ” . The article starts off with the author explaining why he wanted to change from MBR to GPT and how it is beneficial because it allows you to the use the full size of your hard drive. He then went on further into explaining how he accomplished this task.
